This week’s WCW goes to Janelle Monáe, the sophisticated yet soulful 29-year-old singer from Kansas City, Kansas. Monáe gets high praises for being able to captivate audiences while still having her clothes on and is most known for her black and white tailored pant suits she wears as as an ode to her and her family before the fame. Having her own style sets her apart from the standard of beauty, but her moral standards are what’s more important.
That includes standing up to people trolling on Twitter. Just yesterday, someone tweeted to Janelle, “Girl stop being so soulful and be sexy,” the user wrote. “Tired of those dumba–suits … you fine but u too damn soulful man.” Monáe responded, “@mellow_saa sit down. I’m not for male consumption.” While some took this as her coming out as a lesbian, Captain Obvious could tell you she meant exactly what she said.
Her image is not for the same male consumption that everything else is, its not meant to be looked at from the aspect of a man gawking at a woman and her physical features. It’s meant to be enjoyed; its artistic, its lively, its free. Everything from her gorgeous smile to her angelic voice
Not to mention that Ms. Monae would probably kill your baddest video vixen in a two piece, but lucky for us, her focus is on her craft. The songstress recently released her new single and video, “Yoga,” where she gives a new meaning to the “downward dog” yoga position.
