It’s no secret that many people of all colors in the United States have ancestors that either were slaves, or owned them. The show ‘Finding Your Roots’ on PBS chronicles the family trees of some of your fav celebs and digs deep to uncover little known family history. But looks like Ben Affleck wasn’t too happy about what was found.
Affleck recently found out that an ancestor of his owned slaves (what a shocker), and he went through great lengths to try and hide it. But, due to the release of some hacked Sony emails, published by Wikileaks last week sometime, the shows producer Henry Louis Gates Jr. said the actor asked the staff to not release those details about his ancestor.
Affleck now however, says he regrets the decision to hide the information.
“We deserve neither credit nor blame for our ancestors, and the degree of interest in this story suggests that we are, as a nation, still grappling with the terrible legacy of slavery.”
Affleck does go on to say that he thinks his story can contribute to those kinds of discussions.
“While I don’t like that the guy is an ancestor, I am happy that aspect of our country’s history is being talked about.”
But, one has to wonder, if those emails never got hacked, would he be as forth coming with his family tree? Or should wee give him a pass considering his new role as Batman in DC Comics’ Batman vs. Superman? You can read more here.
