While many cringe at the fact some people can openly talk about rape and/or being raped, there are some people that look up to these people as brave souls. To relive that horrific moment truly comes from strength within.

Lena Dunham was one of many honorees at Variety’s Power of Women luncheon in New York City this past Friday. It was while accepting her award when she took a moment to openly talk about her rape experience.

“When I was raped I felt powerless. I felt my value had been determined by someone else. Someone who sent me the message that my body was not my own, and my choices were meaningless.”

It seems Dunham is using her personal experience with being sexually assaulted and voice as a celebrity to help others.

“It took years to recognize my personal worth was not tied to my assault; the voices telling me I deserved this were phantoms, they were liars. So as a feminist, as a sexual assault survivor, my ultimate goal is to use my experience, my platform, and yes, my privilege, to reverse stigma and give voice to other survivors.”

If you or anyone you know is going through this horrible experience, do not hesitate to call out for help. You could save a life!
