When De La Soul sat down with Vlad TV, they defended themselves asking their fans for money and why they are done with the traditional concept of being signed to a label and how that is modern day slavery. The Long Island trio is going to independently release their next album thanks to the fans who raised over $500,000 (original goal was $110,000) for the group via a viral Kickstarter campaign.
Posdnuos, Dave, and Maseo went on to speak in detail how signing to a music label equates to slavery, and how exactly one funds an album through Kickstarter. Dave went on to say:
“We’re not gonna be on [an independent label like] Koch or a major. We don’t want to do that anymore. That’s slavery. So in order to get this completed – partly we funded ourselves, and we have a team, a group of people, a following, and a fan base who believe in what we do. And don’t want nothing in return except the music.”
