Rakim, the legendary MC had some great things to say about two of hip-hop’s legends in the making J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar. In an interview with Montreality, the Long Island native spoke about his new upcoming album and how he felt about Lamar and Cole, both of who he admitted to listening to in his free time. He is proud to be mentioned on Cole’s “January 28th,” which talks about himself as “The Great Rakim.” He goes on to say:

“It’s a blessing to get that love from people like that, that’s on fire,” he said. “A young artist coming up doing his thing, reaching back towards the past and showing love, I appreciate that. J. Cole. Big ups, keep doing your thing heavy.”

In the 9 minute interview, he also gives props to K. Dot for changing this generation’s music and actually making statements with his lyrics:

“He’s again that new fuel, a conscious new fuel where he’s not just doing whats hot for today you know what I mean?, he has substance, and he ain’t scared to make a statement neither you know what I mean? And he’s nice man.”
