A new Harriet Tubman movie is set to come out on HBO, with Kirk Ellis writing, Doug Ellin producing and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV involved in the new project, as well. Oscar nominee and How to Get Away With Murder’s Viola Davis has been chosen (to play Tubman) for the project.
The movie is based on a book about Tubman’s life called, Bound for the Promised Land, written by historian Kate Clifford. The American hero was born a slave, escaped, then through the Underground Railroad, (secret passage ways through the forest and safe houses) she helped more like 300 slaves run their way to freedom in the safe North, and later fought in the Civil War on the Union’s side.
The story of the Underground Railroad has been in the eyes of the public lately. WGN America has the series Underground produced by Akiva Goldsman which stars Christopher Meloni and Jurnee Smollett Bell, and has Kanye West expected to serve as musical consultant. While NBC is prepping a miniseries named Freedom Run produced by Stevie Wonder.
