Did Jay Z stiff artist Marina Abramović on a publicity deal? Or, is her art just not that interesting to Jay fans? Abramović, whose 2010 installation The Artist Is Present inspired Jay Z’s 2013 music video “Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film,” revealed that the collaboration did not go as she expected, feeling like Jay “used her.”
Although Hov wasn’t available for a comment, Abramović apparently thought the Brooklyn born mogul’s name was going to bring her more publicity. In a way, it did, especially because many people never heard her name until that video.
Abramović also told Spike that the situation with Jay Z was different from her relationship with Lady Gaga, who appeared naked in one of Abramović’s films.
“Just by having 45 million followers, she brought all these young kids into my public,”
Calling the situation a “one-way transaction,” Abramović claimed she was naïve and said she wouldn’t be licensing her work like that again.
“It was really new to me, and I had no idea that this would happen. It’s so cruel, it’s incredible. I will stay away from it for sure.”
