It’s no surprise with the amount of attention the police have been receiving, but when you have a number behind all of this, it’s a bit more scary. A total of 385 people have been killed by law enforcement shootings so far this year according to The Washington Post, and the year is no where near to be over.
Now this is a scary thought when you’re supposed to look at law enforcement as our public protectors. On average, that’s 2 people shot and killed a day, contrary to the FBI statistics over the past decade which was one person per day. The people who were shot and killed ranged in the ages of 25 and 34. Whether they have committed a crime or not, only three officers are being charged out of the nearly 400 killings.
Former police chief and president of the Washington, D.C. Police Foundation stated:
“These shootings are grossly underreported, We are never going to reduce the number of police shootings if we don’t begin to accurately track this information.”
If this keeps up, by the end of the year the police will reach killing a 1,000 people.
