Cuban mothers who are affected with HIV or syphilis will not pass the disease on to their children anymore. According to The World Health Organization Cuba is the first country to put a stop to the transmission. Margaret Chan, WHO’s director general, is calling it “one of the greatest public health achievements possible.” With the mother and child using the treatment of the  antiretrovirals, Cuban medical officials were able to decrease the spread risk from 15 to 45 percent to just 1 percent. This is major! Cuba is able to protect millions of HIV positive mothers by their discovery. The Gaurdian is calling it   “a major breakthrough in the campaign to rid of the world of the virus.”
