Matt “Megatoad” Stonie came out of the blue and upset Joey “Jaws” Chestnut at the annual Fourth of July hot dog eating contest at Nathan’s Famous in Coney Island. This victory ended Chestnut’s 8 year winning streak.
Stonie finished second last year, but this year swallowed a whopping 62 hotdogs and buns. Stonie beat Chestnut by only two. The runner up Tim “Eater X” Janus ate 35 hot dogs. Stonie told ESPN that
“I trained hard for this. This is actually amazing. We don’t just go up there and eat hot dogs. We practice for this. We prepare our bodies. It was a tough contest. Joey brings it all. I had to push really hard to beat him. But I feel great.”
Chestnut smiled after the contest, saying he was slow and admitting his fault. He also said:
“I’ve been looking for competition for a long time and I finally have it. He made me hungry.”
Chestnut set the record back in 2013 by swallowing 69 franks, and twice reached 68. Last year is when he fell off to 61.
The men’s contest was more than an hour after the woman competed, and the champion Miki Sudo got first place with a cool 38 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. In second place was Sonya “Black Widow” Thomas who ate 31 hot dogs.
