Grand opening, grand closing.
Apart from exclusive events here and there like a Jay Z B-sides concert and a Rihanna “BBHMM” viewing session, TIDAL hasn’t really done much of anything groundbreaking in the streaming business. Apple has come and totally taken the wind out of them with Apple Music, while Spotify continues to flourish as well. Even Rih’s promise of an exclusive “premiere” of the “BBHMM” music video on the service lasted about an hour before she took it to VEVO, hardly incentivizing any fans to spend their hard-earned coins on it.
Unsurprisingly, rumor has it that Jay Z is ready to jump ship. Hits Daily Double reports that TIDAL has cost him millions of his own money so far because he never got the expected funding, he still hasn’t paid the licensing fees to the rights holders, and with the way things are looking for it, it’s unlikely any investors will want to help him right now. And the alleged nail in the coffin? Birdman’s recent lawsuit for copywrite infringement on Lil Wayne’s FWA.
Something tells me Hov’s pockets will be just fine, though.
