Officers of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department had been on the lookout for a car that had been carjacked on Sunday (Aug 9) morning. Later that night, officers were able to find a car that fit the description of the stolen vehicle.
They followed the car for a while at a safe distance. Eventually the car made a turn onto Butler Ave, where the driver attempted but failed to make a U-turn out of the cul-de-sac.
After crashing into the driver’s side of a police car, the passenger doors opened and multiple passengers exited the car and ran westbound.
The driver, who was identified as 15-year-old Andre Green, refused to get out of the car and attempted to run into the officers with the stolen vehicle.
At 11:15 p.m. officers fired shots at the car, striking Green, who then exited the car with a handgun but immediately collapsed. Green was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers say Green and the other suspects had been executing drive-by shootings after they stole the car.
The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave. IMPD has not yet identified the other passengers, but is encouraging those with information to come forward.
