The Jets’ star quarterback, Geno Smith, will be out for the first 6 to 10 weeks of the 2015-2016 NFL season because he was sucker punched in a locker room over $600.
Nope, we aren’t joking.
According to source who was in the locker room when the incident happened, Smith’s former teammate, IK Enemkpali, got upset over $600 in travel costs he covered for Smith to attend his charity event in Texas. As we all know, money and friendships rarely mix and this time, things got out of hand.
Smith now has to get surgery to fix a broken jaw and Enemkpali was let go from the team. Geno then posted this photo to Instagram after the incident.
In a press conference on Tuesday (Aug.11), Todd Bowles confirmed the reports, saying:
“There was an altercation in the locker room… Had nothing to do with football. Something very childish. He got cold cocked, sucker punched whatever you want to call it, in the jaw.”
Later, after being released from the team, Enemkpali released a statement of his own.
“I apologize to the Jets organization, coaches, teammates and fans. Geno and I let our frustration get the best of us, but I should have just walked away from the situation. I deeply regret and apologize for my actions. It was never my intention to harm anyone. I appreciate the opportunity I had with the Jets.”
Hopefully, the team is able to get back up QB Ryan Fitzpatrick ready by the time the season starts.
