A North Carolina teen is being charged as an adult and facing 10 years in prison for having and sharing naked photos of his girlfriend. Cormega Copening, 17, is being charged as an adult and facing 10 years in prison for possessing naked photos of himself and his 16-year-old girlfriend. The age of consent is 16 in North Carolina, but according to Sgt. Swain of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, you have to be 18 or older to receive sexually explicit texts, photos or videos.
Cormega “is facing two counts of second-degree sexual exploitation and three counts of third-degree exploitation. The third-degree charges stem from the pictures Copening had of himself. Each count is a felony charge carrying at least two years in jail.
According to The Root, Cormega’s girlfriend took a plea deal and was sentenced to “one year of probation without access to a phone, a $200 fine and a class on making smarter life decisions.”
If Cormega is found guilty, he will be required to register as a sex offender, which will follow him for the rest of his life.
I’m looking back at myself at 16 and I can’t even imagine dealing with the burden of possibly being a sex offender because of what I did with my minor boyfriend. I’m not saying promote sex to teenagers, but really? 10 years in jail and having to live the rest of his life as a sex offender? That’s overboard.
