32 whole years later, the Miss America pageant officially apologized to Vanessa Williams. In 1984, Williams became the first African American to win the Miss America title but was forced to resign the title after nude photos were published in Penthouse Magazine months after she won. On Sunday (September 13th), During the 2015 Miss America pageant, Sam Haskell, the executive chairman of the Miss America pageant, issued a formal apology for the way the pageant officials handled the controversy. Haskell, who was not affiliated with the pageant at the time, said:
” I want to apologize for anything that was said or done that made you feel any less the Miss America and the Miss America you always will be.”
The Wednesday before the pageant, Williams tweeted out a picture of her 1984 crown to let everybody know she regardless of her resignation in 84′, she still had the crown.
