Gabrielle Union, 42, graces the cover of Redbook’s October anti aging issue. She opened up to Redbook about the difficulties of having a thriving career and starting a family.

” The reality is that women are discriminated against in the workplace for being mothers. As much as there are strides being made- you get pregrant, your carrer takes a hit. You cant have a bad day. Don’t you dare cry at work. Dont raise your voice. Especially if you’re a black woman in corporate America- now you’re the ‘angry black woman'”.

Union and her husband, Dwayne Wade, just recently celebrated their 1- year anniversary. As far as starting a family with Wade, she said “so far, it just has not happened for us”. She also added that there is a negative stigma placed on women when they prioritize their career over a family.

” There’s a certain amount of shame that is placed on women who have perhaps chosen a career over starting a family younger. The penance for being a career woman is barrenness. You feel like your wearing a scarlet letter”.

Union is one of three women on Redbook’s anti-aging issue. She is joined by Erin Andrews and Maria Menounos who also discuss the difficulties of having a career and starting a family.
