During the star-studded Global Citizen Festival in New York City over the weekend, First Lady Michelle Obama introduced #62MillionGirls to the world, a program focused on education for girls.
In a video message, the First Lady along with several other celebrities including Beyonce and Hugh Jackman urging people to post photos of themselves on their social media pages saying what they learned in school and using #62milliongirls. The photos will then be uploaded to the campaign website, 62milliongirls.com, to highlight the outstanding number of girls who are not receiving education. Later in the evening, the First Lady joined Beyonce on stage at the end of her set to further push the campaign.
#62milliongirls is in partnership with Girl Rising. The two announced their partnership in March. The First Lady traveled the world and met with several young woman who have yet to receive education:
” I see myself in these girls. I see my daughters in these girls…For me this is truly a moral issue.”
Several celebrities like Kerry Washington and Shonda Rhimes have already taken to social media to express their support.
