Ever since Star Wars: The Force Awakens was announced to be hitting theaters on December 18th, the internet hasn’t shut up about what to expect and begging for leaks. A few individuals seemed to be bothered that Attack The Block star John Boyega was cast as the first black Stormtrooper. If you were expecting John to be sitting at home crying over it, you’re so wrong.
“It was unnecessary. I’m in the movie, what are you going to do about it? You either enjoy it or you don’t. I’m not saying get used to the future, but what is already happening. People of color and women are increasingly being shown on-screen. For things to be whitewashed just doesn’t make sense. All the films I’ve done have had a secret commentary on stereotypical mentalities. It’s about getting people to drop a prejudiced state of mind and realize, Oh shit we’re just watching normal people.”
In The Force Awakens, He plays a Stormtrooper named Finn who Boyega says has a unique narrative never before seen in the Star Wars Universe. “Finn’s character is in conflict, mostly with himself but also with the powers,” he tells V Magazine. We’ll find out what those powers are in two months….
Although most of us wouldn’t want to watch the Star Wars movie, you’d be surprised just how many people do and give it a chance. As for the racist fans of Star Wars, you will live. Get over it and enjoy the movie.
