Ever since Jay Z discovered Rihanna, dating rumors have been an on and off story for the two.
Now, almost 10 years later, the rumor is being put down for good. Rihanna’s former publicist Jonathan Hay is coming clean and issuing an apology for starting a rumor that she was having an affair with Jay. According to the British publication Daily Mail, “In hopes of giving Rihanna’s debut single Pon De Replay a boost in 2005, her then-publicist Jonathan Hay claimed that the older hip hop star was cheating on Beyonce with the then 17-year-old Rihanna.”
In light of a new book, Becoming Beyonce: The Untold Story, hitting shelves, the publicist was forced to issue an apology. The book is written by celebrity biographer J Randy Taraborelli, and claims that Rihanna was the blame for the couple’s yearlong separation. Hay has already issued an apology stating that he feels “this whole thing is very awkward.”
In a statement Hay detailed the rumor, “The PR stunt that I did was out of desperation to help break ‘Pon de Replay.’ It was reckless and I didn’t think it was going to work. I was just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what would stick.”
Was breaking a song ever that serious? Well, at least the rumors are now dead.
