After Black Twitter got 20-year-old Erika Escalante fired from her internship at Isagenix for posting a photo of her and a friend in a cotton field with the caption, “Our inner nig–r came out today.”, the Arizona State University student has finally spoken out.
Fox 10 Phoenix spoke with Escalante and she told the news station that she is not a racist and the tweet was a lack of “better judgment.”
“I do know better, my parents tell me I need to watch what you post. Everybody tells me you need to watch what you post,” she told Fox 10. “It was just a lack of my better judgment at the moment I was not thinking at all. People make mistakes, everybody makes you learn from them and then you just move forward.”
The news station also says that Escalante deleted all of her social media accounts. She also claims that someone has taken her photo and her Twitter user name and is continuing to post racist messages. She is scheduled to meet with her Dean on Monday and is unsure what the results of that meeting may be. Watch her full interview below.
