A black Louisville judge has made numerous headlines after dismissing an all white jury chose to try a drug case of an African American male. Jefferson circuit Judge Olu Stevens chose to remove the jury, ignoring the protests of both the defense and prosecutors.
Interesting enough, this isn’t the first time he has done something like this. In a totally unrelated case, with the request of a defense attorney, Stevens dismissed a 13-member jury in the case of a theft that involved an African American male.
“There is not a single African American on this jury, and [the defendant] is an African-American man,” Stevens explained to a jury on a courtroom recording. “I cannot in good conscience go forward with this jury.”
A new jury was selected the next day with four African American members, according to The Courier-Journal.
It’s never as simple as just dismissing the original jury, because right now The Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney office have asked whether that’s in the judge’s jurisdiction.
