Investigators believe gang members lured Tyshawn Lee into an alley behind his grandmother’s house and then shot and killed him. Police believe the shooting is connected to Tyshawn’s father, Pierre Stokes, who reportedly has gang connections. Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told reporters Thursday:

“Tyshawn Lee was murdered in probably the most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime that I’ve witnessed in 35 years of policing. We’re pretty certain that this is not an accident. He was not a bystander. Tyshawn’s father has ties to a certain gang that is in conflict with another gang.”

Even the child’s father, Pierre Stokes, believes that his son was killed on purpose:

“If it wasn’t a target, he wouldn’t have got hit so many times in the back and the face. I think he was targeted.”

The Tribune claims that his father hasn’t been cooperating with the investigation:

“We’ve tried to interview him at least twice. I can’t even tell you what he said” because Stokes used language “you can’t say on TV. I’m a father, many of us here are fathers, and my reaction would be a little bit different. My reaction would be very clearly different.”

Stokes did tell reporters after the press conference that he has told police everything he knows.:

“I’ve been answering all the questions [police] have asked me, and I keep telling them I don’t know anything. I would never do anything to hurt my son. It ends her. Right now, there’s nothing for me to do but to lay my son down peacefully.”

Authorities are offering a $35,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in the case.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, a priest in Chicago, has also offered to pay to relocate any witnesses who feel they would be in danger for providing information. He also said:

“What happened to Tyshawn Lee took us to a new low. This wasn’t a drive-by. This was not a spray of bullets. A baby was executed. A baby was assassinated right behind us in this alley.”
