Spike Lee has been receiving negative backlash for his new film Chiraq based on the title alone, implying that the city of Chicago is a war zone, but now that the trailer has been released, the backlash just got heavier.

Everyone from community leaders, the mayor, Chicago rappers and residents have had something negative to say about Chiraq. The negative light that the film title put on Chicago didn’t sit well with the city. Now that the trailer has been released, the city is upset saying that Lee is making light of a very serious situation. Gun violence has claimed the lives of hundreds of black men in Chicago in recent years and the trailer seemed rather comical.

Spike Lee defended this film stating the following:

“There are some very humorous moments in the trailer. Now some people are getting it twisted and thinking this is a comedy. Chiraq is not a comedy, Chiraq is a satire, and there’s a difference between humor and comedy…in no way shape or form are we making light of the lives that have been murdered with this senseless violence. There’s an old statement, ‘I gotta laugh to keep from crying’. Well, I think that’s apropos with Chiraq.”

The video below features a more serious side of Chiraq featuring Nick Cannon, Angela Bassett, John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson.
