Zendaya is a young woman known for speaking her mind. Recently, in an interview with Hunger magazine Zendaya expressed her point of view on cultural appropriation and growing up in the industry.
I don’t like speaking about things that I don’t know about. But cultural appropriation is something that I can understand, and something that I can appreciate people being concerned about. You witness it all the time, and for me at least, being someone who’s very proud of where I’m from, I think it’s important to be vocal.
The 19-year old continue to say that she knows who she is and is proud of it.
Obviously, both my parents are American, and were born in America, but America is such a melting pot — everyone’s from everywhere. The only people who are native are Native Americans! So everyone’s an immigrant in a sense. My mum has roots in Germany and Ireland, and my dad is African American. There’s a big disconnect with African-American people, because we’re not able to trace our roots as far back, so I think it was really important to my father to take the time to find out where he really comes from. I have that pride in knowing that I’m an African American. I think when you develop pride in where you’re from then you have more respect and understanding in terms of where other people are from also. No one’s just white and no one’s just black.
In the interview she also mentions about growing up in the spotlight and not being taken seriously because of her age.
Of course I’ve had a problem with people taking me seriously because of my age”, People are always going do that because you’re less experienced, you haven’t lived as much. And in a sense it is true that there are certain things that you only learn with time. But I think that there are also a lot of things that young people know that older people don’t, and older people will never understand again because they’re in a different section of their lives. I think when you’re young you’re a lot more open-minded, and sometimes you’re a lot more perceptive about what’s going on in the world…It’s important to raise your voice in things you feel passionate about, and things that you know about. Don’t raise your voice just to raise your voice, if have nothing behind it and don’t know what you’re talking about. But if you take the time to learn about something, and educate yourself, then you have a voice, and you’re allowed to use it.
Age ain’t nothing but a number! Zendaya is wise beyond her years.
