Ever since Jason Van Dyke got released, new details have emerged about the officer. At first, according to a Cook Country Spokesman, Dyke was set with a $1.5 million dollar bail, and was responsible for 10% of that amount. Dyke walked out of jail on Monday (Nov. 30) mostly due to the fundraising efforts of a local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police through his wife on a GoFundMe page, and later through their own website.
Van Dyke was released so quick after being behind bars because according to his attorney Daniel Herbert, he
“[doesn’t] pose a flight risk.”
While there is obvious evidence of officer Van Dyke shooting McDonald 16 times, Herbert argues that
“his client feared for his life, acted lawfully and that the video did not tell the whole story.”
Still, prosecutors believe that Van Dyke should’ve been held without bail because of the violent shooting. Ever since the Chicago court released the video and it went viral, the streets have been on fire. Apparently Mcdonald was carrying a knife the day he was killed,
“the three inch blade recovered from the scene had been folded into the handle.”
