The creator of an outerwear giant has just passed away.
Douglas Tompkins, founder of The Northface, was boating with 5 other people in Chile when their kayak capsized. At 72-years-old he was flown to Coyhaique Regional Hospital with severe hypothermia. He stayed in intensive care until he died on Tuesday.
Chile’s army say the reason for the capsizing of the kayak was the strong water. A local prosecutor also stated that “considerable amount of time in waters under 4 degrees Celsius.” The other boaters were eventually rescued and none of them got seriously injury.
In the 1960’s is when Tompkins founded the Northface as a small retail shop in San Francisco. His fortune grew with his creation of Espirit, which he founded with his ex-wife.
