Spike Lee fires back at Chance The Rapper for criticizing his new film Chi-Raq.  In an interview with MSNBC Lee responds by stating that the rapper’s father, Ken Williams-Bennett works with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Bennett is Mayor Emanuel’s deputy chief of staff and director of public engagement.

“First of all, Chance the Rapper should say full disclosure: His father works for the mayor. He’s the chief of staff, whatever the title is. His father is the chief of staff. Show me any criticism, if you’re so concerned about Chicago, do your research, show me where he’s made a criticism about the mayor. I think your findings will be surprising. He’s not criticized the mayor. Why? His father works for the mayor. “

On Twitter Chance The Rapper called the film “goofy” and mentioned that Lee who is a New Yorker might not have been the best fit to depict the violence in Chicago.

According to Lee, Mayor Emanuel asked him to not name the film Chi-Raq. Lee says that he did not come up with the title of the film. Lee states the term was coined by local Chicago rappers. Lee said Mayor Emanuel didn’t like the title because it would ruin the city’s tourism and economic development.
