Things got pretty awkward on live television last night, as Steve Harvey mistakenly announced the wrong winner of the Miss Universe pageant because of a confusing index card, then had to take it back! After getting a look at the card that had the winners’ names (above), it is quite hard to read, as the order of the runners’ up, paired with the small font and odd placement of the winner’s name could truly make for an easy mix-up, especially with the pressure of live TV.
After announcing Miss USA, Olivia Jordan, as the second runner-up, Steve initially named Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo, as the winner, while making Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurzbach, the first runner-up. It was then he realized his error, and had to take the crown back from Miss Colombia, and give it to its rightful owner, Miss Philippines.
Of course the internet erupted, and Steve immediately issued multiple apologies. The first came on air, and from there, it was on to Twitter, then a longer statement on Facebook. Check out all three below, and let us know your thoughts on the [hilarious but messed up] mistake!
