Former policer officer, Michael Slager, who shot 50-year-old man, Walter Scott five times in the back was released from prison Monday after posting a $500k bail. The former police officer has been in custody, staying in solitary confinement since the April 2015 shooting.
Slager’s bail request was previously denied by the judge in September, citing that Slager was a flight risk and danger to the community. Slager’s attorney, Andy Savage, has since argued that Slager has low risk for violent behavior, isn’t a flight risk and is also battling celiac disease, due to the gluten in the prison food. The judge took these into consideration and the lengthy time Slager will have to wait for his trial, which is set to be October 31st, and decided to give him a bond. Slager must now remain on house arrest until his trial.
The family of victim, Walter Scott, released a statement saying,
The family is pleased at how the Charleston community has responded throughout this situation and asks again for calm following this decision. They will now anxiously await Michael Slager’s criminal trial and continue to thank the community for their prayers and support.
