Black Pastors in Chicago did not attend Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s annual MLK breakfast on Monday. The pastors reportedly refused to go in protest for Emanuel’s allegeed cover-up of Laquan McDonald’s shooting death in 2014. Bishop Edgar Mullins of Grace Worship Family Center said:

“Our problems can’t be solved over bacon and eggs.”

Another minister by the name of Bishop James Duke said:

“We don’t think that a kumbaya breakfast at this moment is the time that we should be at the table with our mayor.”

Pastors who skipped breakfast joined fellow protesters from the community outside while over 100 people were eating inside. Emanuel actually spoke on police brutality during the breakfast saying:

“To deal with the violence that claims lives on our streets, mostly the lives of young African-American men, we also have to root out the cancer of police abuse.”
