Actor and director, Nate Parker tells Hollywood Reporter that there are a lack of roles for Black men. Nate Parker states that some of the roles that he played did not have “integrity.”
“As a Black man, you leave auditions not hoping you get the job, but wondering how you explain it to your family if you do.”
Parker’s views on Hollywood influenced him to tell the story of Nat Turner, a slave who spearheaded a rebellion. Filmmakers advised Parker that the movie would be too violent, costly, and stir up controversy. The film is directed, produced, written, and starred by Parker. The film is called Birth of a Nation and will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this week.
