The hashtag, #OscarsSoWhite has definitely sparked dialogue and action in Hollywood in terms of diversity, but Russell Simmons is taking it a step further. The mogul’s platform, All Def Digital, is partnering with the Fusion cable network to air the All Def Movie Awards on Sunday night, Feb. 28, as a hip-hop alternative to the Oscars.
This means that the Oscars and the All Def Movie Awards will be running during the same timeslot, on the same day. Disney/ABC will have a stake in the Movie Awards, since Fusion is a joint venture between Univision and Disney/ABC. The Oscars will be airing on ABC.
Tony Rock is serving as master of ceremonies at the All Def Movie Awards. His brother, Chris Rock will be hosting the Oscars that same night as well. Could there be a little sibling rivalry?
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Simmons, ADD founder and chairman, does not see this awards show as the “Black Oscars.”
“The All Def Movie Awards are not the Black Oscars, but they could be.”
The nominees for the All Def Movie Award’s best picture are Beasts of No Nation, Chi-Raq, Concussion, Creed, Dope and Straight Outta Compton. The winner will be chosen via online voting which ends at midnight on Feb. 23. To cast your vote, click here.
