Singer and Songwriter, BJ the Chicago Kid has been all the buzz since he independently released his debut album Pineapple Now-Laters in 2012. The success of his indie album and mixtapes caught the eye of Motown Records and landed him a deal where they re-released the album, and released his follow up In My Mind on Feb. 19.

To celebrate the release of the album, BJ and Footaction held a listening session in NYC at Noble on Feb. 25. The R&B singer was smiling from ear to ear as he celebrated with the intimate crowd.

“I’m just doing what I Love,” BJ said to the crowd before he played the album.

The 15-track album is a breath of fresh air from all of the “turn up” or “trap” R&B many believe have saturated mainstream R&B. If you are a person who believed the art of R&B is dead, In My Mind will surely change your mind. After the success of his single “Church” last year, it became clear that BJ planned to continue to uphold the Motown legacy that was created by artist like Micheal Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder, just to name a few. The only difference is he did it his way and paid homage to his gospel and neo-soul roots. He has features from Eric Ingram, Chance the Rapper, Isabella, Kendrick Lamar and more.

The album will not disappoint any lover of R&B, and BJ himself is a humble and down to earth artist. He literally spoke to every person in the room.

Songs to look out for: “Church”, “Shine”, “The New Cupid” & “Turnin’ Me Up”.
