Wondering why it took Sony so long to say this. Probably has nothing to do with the fact that their biggest artist Adele is showing her support. This is the first time Sony has broke their silence since the dispute happened, they claim they cannot do anything about her contract because she is technically signed to Dr. Luke’s label. Apparently only he has the power to end the agreement.
A Sony lawyer claims that “Sony is doing everything it can to support the artist in these circumstances…” If you haven’t heard the story by time, Kesha claims that when she was 18 she was drugged and sexually assaulted by Dr. Luke, although she never filed criminal charges against him until years later.
Scott A. Edelman, a lawyer for the company, told The New York Times:
“Sony has made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement or interaction with Luke whatsoever, but Sony is not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha.”
Kesha commented herself on the case Wednesday, saying in a letter to fans:
“All I ever wanted was to be able to make music without being afraid, scared, or abused. This case has never been about a renegotiation of my record contract – it was never about getting a bigger, or a better deal. This is about being free from my abuser. I would be willing to work with Sony if they do the right thing and break all ties that bind me to my abuser.”
Shortly after posting this, her fellow Sony signed artist Adele acknowledged Kesha’s legal troubles while picking up one of her four Brit Awards in London and said:
“And I would like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha.”
She isn’t the only artist to support Kesha. To name a few Taylor Swift has donated $250,000 to Kesha while Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus, Fiona Apple and Ariana Grande are among thousands who have posted messages on social media to the #FreeKesha campaign.
In the meantime, Dr. Luke is claiming that he didn’t rape Kesha, and that they never even had sex together. Court documents seen exclusively by Daily Mail Online, filed in October 2014, describes in detail over a decade of abuse and exploitation that left Kesha ‘broken, damaged and traumatized.’ So hurt that she even had to check into rehab.
Earlier this week, a 2011 video emerged showing Kesha saying under oath that producer Dr Luke never drugged her or made ‘sexual advances.’ She was obviously scared. Let’s see how this cookie crumbles.
