Everyone wondered what Chris Rock would say while hosting the 2016 Academy Awards in wake of #OscarsSoWhite, and how would he address the lack of diversity.
In his opening monologue he called the Oscars the “White People’s Choice Awards,” and said the Oscars have ALWAYS been racist.
“We were too busy being raped or lynched to care about who’s winning best cinematographer,” Rock said, causing viewers to be conflicted about if the joke was too far.
He also threw shade at Jada Pinkett-Smith. “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited.” He acknowledges the snubs were not fair, but “it’s also not fair Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West.” Yikes…
Rock suggested that the Oscars should have black categories, like Best Black Friend, which he jokes Wanda Sykes would win every year. Finally he ended with something every POC actor can agree with: “We want opportunities. Not just once. All you guys get great parts all the time.”
He brought out Stacey Dash as part of a diversity skit. Probably the most awkward moment of the night. Chris Rock introduced Stacey as the New Director for Minority Outreach Programs to a stunned crowd. Once she came out, she said:
“I can not wait to help my people out,” said Stacey with a giggle. “Happy Black History Month!”

She defended her part in the skit in a blog post here.
Finally, even though he lost the Oscar to Sam Smith, The Weeknd put on a sultry performance for his nominated song, “Earned It.” Check it out below.
