The 88th annual Academy Awards was Sunday (Feb. 28) and according to Entertainment Weekly the show hit the lowest ratings it has had in many years.
Entertainment Weekly reported that the Oscars had 34.5 million viewers and a 10.4 rating among adults 18–49, which is a six percent drop compared to last year’s show. Because of the Oscars excluding people of color from any nomination, the #OscarSowhite hashtag was born and Jada Pinkett-Smith charged people of color with an Oscar Boycott. Also, Al Sharpton led a protest about the Oscar’s lack of diversity not too far from where the Oscars were being held.
Whether the low ratings were caused by the Oscar boycott or not, the Academy must change something or their ratings will continue to decline.
