At the end of the award’s show, the Oscars decided to make a statement by playing Public Enemy’s song, “Fight the Power.” This decision didn’t go over too well with the group.
With the controversy surrounding #OscardsSoWhite and certain stars in the entertainment industry boycotting the Oscars, this move by the Academy wasn’t so smooth or subtle.
According to TMZ, Public Enemy member, Professor Griff believes that the Academy was just paying “lip service” to Black protesters and will go right back to business as usual. He also said, “The show can’t claim the blackness of Public Enemy’s message.”
