Actress, Zoe Saldana is having a rough time after having played Nina Simone in the upcoming biopic, Nina. Recently, the trailer for Nina was released and people were not too happy seeing the light skin actress in dark makeup and a prosthetic nose, and apparently neither was the estate of the late Nina Simone.

From the beginning of the announcement that Zoe Saldana would play Ms. Simone, Nina Simone’s daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly told Huffington Post last year (2015):

I don’t want to come down on Zoe any more than I already have, I love her as an actress. Truly, I do, but not all people are meant to play certain parts. The energy and the name behind this project is Cynthia Mort. She’s the writer, she’s the director, she’s the one who came up with the concept. And she’s the one who set this whole thing in motion. And it has been full of non-truth since its inception. And the addition of Zoe Saldana to the casting — for me — was only a further example of how much this project really just veered away from what the truth was.”

Now, since Saldana is feeling the brunt of the backlash, she attempted to defend herself playing the role in a tweet which quotes Nina Simone saying, “I’ll tell you what freedom is to me- No Fear… I mean really, no fear.” #NinaSimone. But the Nina Simone verified account quickly claps back saying, “.@zoesaldana Cool story but please take Nina’s name out your mouth. For the rest of your life.”

Poor Zoe, well at least she tried.
