It’s no secret that actress, Zoe Saldana has received massive amounts of backlash on her portrayal of late singer, Nina Simone in the upcoming Nina biopic. Saldana who is of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent received less than stellar comments from many for wearing dark face makeup in this role.
The official Twitter account of the late singer’s estate expressed its thoughts about the actress and mother or two playing the role of Simone:
.@zoesaldana Cool story but please take Nina’s name out your mouth. For the rest of your life.

Nina Simone’s daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly came to the defense of Saldana when she spoke to Time. “It’s unfortunate that Zoe Saldana is being attacked so viciously when she is someone who is part of a larger picture,” said Kelly. “It’s clear she brought her best to this project, but unfortunately she’s being attacked when she’s not responsible for any of the writing or the lies.”
Although Kelly showed her support for the Dominican beauty, she didn’t shy away from the discussion about the abyss of actresses that could be better casting choices for the role of her mother.
“There are many superb actresses of color who could more adequately represent my mother and could bring her to the screen with the proper script, the proper team, and a sense of wanting to bring the truth of my mother’s journey to the masses.”
