Today, March 16, President Obama has made his announcement for who he feels is the best candidate to fill the late Antonin Scalia’s Supreme Court Justice seat. He has named moderate D.C. federal appeals court judge, Derrick Garland as his nominee based on his, “decency, modesty, integrity, even-handedness, and excellence.”
Garland’s resume is pretty impressive, Garland has been serving as the chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. As chief judge, he was intertwined with some of the most publicized investigations during Clinton’s presidency, including the Oklahoma City bombing, the Unabomber case, and the Atlanta Olympics bombing.
This nomination is another moment shaping up the president’s exit from the White House. Obama stated about the nomination:
It is both my constitutional duty to nominate a Justice and one of the most important decisions that I – or any president – will make.
