Universal has publicly admitted to making two separate movie trailers for “Straight Outta Compton” to make the film appeal to different races. The trailer that was meant for white audiences failed to mention N.W.A., instead they focused on the rise of Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. This was all revealed during a panel at SXSW featuring the marketing chief of Universal, Doug Neil and Jim Underwood, who is the head of Facebook’s entertainment.
Neil insists on the reasoning behind showing two different trailers is because Ruh “general population”(aka white people)do not have much knowledge of the rap history.
“They connected to Ice Cube as an actor and Dr. Dre as the face of Beats.”
The trailer for black people mentioned N.W.A and the rise of the group because most of them know the history behind the group. It seemed to work because since the film was released, it brought in over $200 million at the box office.
