N.W.A.’s former manager, Jerry Heller has filed a $110 million complaint about his depiction in last year’s successful biopic, Straight Outta Compton. Heller refutes his depiction as a “sleazy manager.”
The biopic grossed $201.6 million at the box office ending the year as one of the top 10 highest-grossing films. With all the exposure, Heller filed a defamation lawsuit in October of 2015 accusing Universal, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, F. Gary Gray (the movie’s director) and Legendary Pictures Funding of defamation, misappropriation of likeness and copyright infringement, according to Essence.
Universal Pictures has asked for a dismissal of the lawsuit against the biopic, stressing that it is a “dramatization.” A judge has refused the dismissal and has decided to move forward because it cannot be proved that Heller’s depiction is a dramatization.
