A North Carolina HBCU is making some major history in sneaker culture.

Professor Jemayne King is connecting the dots between sneakers and English with his English 296 course. King is a self-proclaimed sneakerhead who has penned the book “Sole Food: Digestible Sneaker Culture” back in 2008. Now, thanks to his love for sneakers and his study of sneaker culture, he’s teaching students lessons that reach far beyond English. The course also touches on elements of sociology, economics, and history, all tied in to the culture of sneakers.

According to King, it’s the first English class in the history of higher education and HBCUs to use sneaker culture as a theme. The class is taught in the same way as any other literature class, but the class examines the ins and outs of sneakers.

You can hear King talk about the class in more detail in the video above.
