Almost two months and a million illegal downloads later, Kanye West’s The Life Of Pablo is number 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.
On April 1, TLOP finally became available on all streaming services since being exclusively released via TIDAL on Feb 14. The album sold 94,000 equivalent album units during the week ending on April 7, with 28,000 of those being pure album sales. The 28,000 copies sold were sold directly (and exclusively,) on KanyeWest.com for $20 a copy.
The album’s No. 1 placement also makes history as the first album to hit the Billboard top spot with a majority of streams. 70% of the units came from streaming services, with just over 99 million streams equating to roughly 66,000 SEA (or streaming equivalent albums) in the first week.
Kanye’s album beat the previous record of an album hitting No. 1 with a majority of streams set by Rihanna a couple of months ago with the release of ANTI. The jury is still out on whether physical copies of TLOP will ever be available, but at least Yeezus can float on the “Ultralight Beam” that is another number one album.
Up next for Yeezy is Turbo Grafx 16 which is set to be released this summer. He’s been in the studio with Lil Yachty, Migos, Kid Cudi, Tyler, the Creator and others.
