It came as a shock to everyone everywhere when news broke that Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot and killed after what appears to be a road rage incident. His wife Racquel was shot twice in the leg but is expected to survive. The alleged shooter, Cardell Hayes, has since then been charged with second-degree murder.
Hayes, according to the Times Picayune, had been a local star who was ranked amongst Louisiana’s tip recruits in 2004 and some D1 programs had minimal interests in him. Though he never played on the college level, he spent time playing organized ball for the Crescent City Kings, a “local developmental team.”
He also was an extra in 22 Jump Street, where he appeared as a football player with only one second of camera time.
Cardinals All-Pro defense back said he knew both Smith and Hayes, stating that Hayes was a “coward”.
Hayes is currently located up New Orleans Parish prison.
