It’s finally here! The first teaser trailer for Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation is finally here. The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year, and caught the eyes of many, especially many well-known production companies. Fox Searchlight Pictures won the battle, and worldwide rights to the film. Fox won with a $17.5 million bid and beat Netflix’s $20 million offer.
Birth of a Nation is a biopic about Nat Turner, in which Parker plays the lead; he has been working on this film for seven years. Parker began writing the screenplay for the film in 2009. He was able to invest $100,000 of his own money into the project by hiring a production manager and doing location scouting in Savannah, Ga.
Here is what Parker had to say about the film during a panel discussion atDeadline‘s Samsung Studio in January:
“I want everyone to be challenged. It’s kind of like a battle cry from a filmmaking standpoint.”
According to Complex, he wanted to make a movie that “people could watch and be affected,” expressing his desire that Birth of a Nation will “hold them hostage in a theater, where they have to see these images, and they have to see the parallels and the themes that are echoing right now in 2016.”
