After months of speculation, Makonnen has parted ways with with Drake’s OVO Sound and is solely signed to Warner Bros. Records. Makonnen originally signed to OVO Sound in 2014, after the success of his Grammy-nominated song, “Tuesday.”
Reports in 2015 indicted that Makonnen was distancing himself from OVO, but it seemed like a thing of the past when he announced on HuffPostLive last month that an OVO compilation album was in the works.
On April 19, Makonnen released a statement to Complex confirming his departure from the label.
“I cannot thank OVO, 40, Oliver, Future & Mr. Morgan, enough for all that they have done for my career. No words can express how much I appreciate Drake for being a part of the success of Tuesday. I’m sure the haters will have something negative to say, but all in all my choice to be solely on Warner Bros Records was the right thing for me and for my best interest. Sorry, there’s no beef report, DRINK MORE WATER.”
Makonnen is moving onward and upward as he just dropped a collaboration with Lil B called “Can’t Let It Go.” The Based God and Makonnen have also confirmed that they will tour together.
