Afeni Shakur Davis, the mother of hip hop legend Tupac, has died at 69 years old.
Reports say that on Monday night (May 2), deputies responded to a call from Shakur’s home in California, where she was taken to a local hospital before being pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m.
Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of her death.
Shakur was the main overseer over Tupac’s estate, which is reported to have brought in a yearly revenue of about $900,000 per year.
At the time of her death, Shakur was also going through a divorce with her husband Gust Davis, who was demanding $10,000 per month in spousal support.
Many know Afeni as the subject of much of Tupac’s music. In addition to being his muse, Afeni took the reigns of her son’s empire following his death. She was also a member of the Black Panther Party (where she changed her name from Alice Faye Williams to Afeni Shakur), and was very politically involved.
Prayers for the Shakur family.
