Lupita Nyong’o  hopped on social media to let Vogue know that her Met Gala hairstyle was not inspired by Audrey Hepburn.  Vogue published an article stating, “the sculptured style is also reminiscent of the updo Audrey Hepburn sported in 1963 with Bert Stern.” The actress took to Instagram to share that her updo style was inspired by african women and other icons that have sported the look.

According to NPR, the hairstyle means wealth in certain African communities. “A towering hairdo has historically signified a person’s tribal background, rank in society — or a wife’s ability to live a life of leisure because of her husband’s wealth.” Check out Lupita’s post below.
