For only the first time in 14 years and the third time in history, an Army Reserve Officer has claimed the title of Miss USA. 26-year-old, Miss D.C and Virginia State Alum, Deshauna Barber, also works as an IT Analyst for the US Department of Commerce said serving runs through her veins,
“I consider it to be a family tradition; patriotism and service for this country.”
She joined the military at the age of 17 and followed in her fathers footsteps whom was deployed to Iraq after World Trade Center Attacks in 2001.
Judges noted that Barber was named the “most disciplined contestant this year.” When asked about her opinions on the government’s recent decision to open combat positions to females, she stated,
“…We are just as tough as men. As a commander of my unit, I am powerful. I am dedicated. And it is important that we recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States Military.”
Congratulations, Deshauna Barber!
